| The effects of water temperature on pollack (Pollachius pollachius) spawning features were individually assessed. During the spawning period, nine fish sets, each composed of one female and two males (mean body weight: 2.5+/-1.0 kg), were placed in small-volume tanks (2 m(3)). Fish sets were held at 8, 10, or 12 degreesC (n=3 for each temperature). Three females released eggs at 8 and 10 degreesC, while only two spawned at 12 degreesC. One hundred thirty-one individual spawns were collected from the eight spawning fish sets. The number of spawns collected per female was significantly lower at 12 degreesC (3.0+/-3.6), compared to 10 degreesC (17.3+/-10.1) and 8 degreesC (23.3+/-2.5). | La pisciculture du Quinquis, sise près de Landivisiau (29), a pour objet la production intensive de smolts de saumon atlantique (Salmo salar) dans le cadre d'un programme d'aménagement et de repeuplement de la rivière Elorn. Depuis sa mise en eau (1976) les résultats ont été décevants et ceci à cause, d'une part de difficultés de démarrage (problèmes alimentaires en autres), d'autre part de problèmes sanitaires : la furonculose ayant entrainé des mortalités importantes dès le 1er automne (alevins à bonne croissance) ou en fin d'hiver. Au total, la survie a toujours été très faible et la production de smolts négligeable. | Les résultats de la campagne 1979-1980 ont montré la nécessité d'améliorer les performances de l'alevinage pour obtenir des résultats de production intéressants en cycle ouvert dans les conditions bretonnes. En effet, une augmentation du taux de smoltification à un an ne semble pouvoir être obtenue dans des conditions économiquement intéressantes (Charge très supérieure à 2 kg/m2), qu'à condition que la taille des tacons soit au moins égale à 6-7 cm en septembre de la première année. | Because of natural complexity, field studies are often inconclusive with regards to the ultimate cause of a given change observed in wild animal populations. As a consequence, there is scope to develop an Experimental Ecology Approach (EEA). In this paper, we favour the use of experimental ecology studies to evaluate the effects of environmental factors on fish biology. We identify the advantages of EEA: disentangling the effects of several factors and identifying their respective roles, generating artificial scenarios and increasing our capability to collect and analyse data. | Atlantic salmon juveniles were subjected to a precocious (day 104 after first feeding) photoperiodic (P) and thermic (T) control.
